The final book of the His Dark Materials series (see: The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife) is perhaps the best and is the most rewarding of the series.

While I would not recommend this series for children, I would say its great for anyone 12 and up because of the way the series makes you think. This is right up there with Harry Potter
